One day, the idea of a wedding in Tuscany stole our hearts. We knew we could design truly beautiful garments that would perform perfectly in a warmer climate and a stunning setting. Inspired by this vision, we decided to plan our own wedding photo session to showcase two of our finest creations against the picturesque landscapes of Sicily. As we kick off the wedding season, we are proud to present the tropical tuxedo.
What is a Tropical Tuxedo?
The origins of the tropical tuxedo date back to 1936. It was then that Esquire magazine began featuring illustrations and descriptions of dinner jackets made from light-colored fabrics, specifically designed for events in locations with notably higher temperatures – such as Palm Beach.
A tropical tuxedo is not entirely white. It traditionally consists of a cream (ivory) dinner jacket paired with black tuxedo trousers. All the classic elements of a tuxedo – shawl or peak lapels, silk-covered buttons and pockets, a lack of vents in the jacket, high-waisted trousers for braces, and a silk stripe (galon) down the leg – are strictly preserved. This ensures the outfit remains exceptionally elegant.
Accessories also follow the classic Black Tie rules: a hand-tied black silk bow tie, silk braces (usually white), and, in the case of single-breasted jackets, a cummerbund to keep the shirt neatly in place. Shoes must be black, and we most often recommend patent leather oxfords. While vintage photographs sometimes feature operapumps (patent leather slip-ons with a silk bow), they are less common in modern styling.
The Wedding Shirt: Why White is Non-Negotiable
A wedding shirt must be white. Even if the bride’s dress is off-white or ivory, this should not influence the color of the groom’s shirt. It is important to remember that the shirt is surrounded by other colors – the suit, the tie, or the pocket square. An off-white shirt will often contrast poorly with these elements, appearing almost yellow. Furthermore, if a groom wears an ecru shirt and stands next to guests in crisp white shirts, his attire may look worn or discolored. The Bride’s dress does not face this issue, as there is rarely another person in a white gown to provide a direct comparison.
Fabric Choice: How to Craft a White Tropical Tuxedo
A white (ivory) dinner jacket must be made from the right material. Light-colored fabrics are naturally translucent; if the material is too thin, the internal construction, pocket bags, and interlining will show through. Therefore, we generally recommend slightly heavier fabrics, such as Barathea, which minimizes transparency.
However, balance is key. A tropical tuxedo jacket shouldn’t be excessively thick. Its very concept was born from the search for the perfect elegant summer garment for warm-weather destinations. In our opinion, a subtle hint of the internal construction showing through the fabric is a characteristic feature, not a flaw, and should be accepted to allow for a wider range of high-performance materials.
For the trousers – since they are black – we can use almost any tuxedo-appropriate fabric. The weave simply needs to complement the jacket. Since their cut is dictated by the timeless rules of classic elegance, the design process is straightforward.
For our featured tropical tuxedo, we chose wool from the renowned French mill Dormeuil, specifically from the Millennial Tech collection. This wool is ecologically produced and carries the RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certification. Furthermore, Millennial Tech utilizes modern finishing technologies, making the fabric stain-resistant, crease-resistant, slightly stretchy, and highly breathable.
The Made To Measure Wedding Suit
Crafting a custom wedding suit or tuxedo typically takes about two months. We begin with an initial consultation to discuss the wedding theme and its level of formality. Once we understand the setting, the season, and the style of the Bride’s gown (or suit!), we can propose the best solutions for the occasion.
For summer weddings, we recommend matte, breathable fabrics; for autumn weddings in the mountains, we might suggest wool flannel. We propose tuxedos only for ceremonies with an elegant setting, while for boho-style weddings, we lean toward earth tones and perhaps subtle patterns.
No client has to navigate the choice of fabric and cut alone. Based on our initial conversation, we narrow down the vast selection of fabrics to a few key collections. After the first meeting, the groom has time to reflect, and once the decision is finalized, we proceed with measurements, fabric ordering, and fittings.
