Purple Suit with a Waistcoat – A Maximalist Custom-Made Garment

An uncommon color, an uncommon lining, an uncommon combination—is there a better example to prove that you can afford to do anything in custom tailoring?

There is no better example to prove that a tailoring workshop can create a highly personalized suit than the project we present in today’s article. From the distinct cut and the selected fabric to the fine details and the unique lining, every element serves as a statement of personal style that is impossible to find in ready-to-wear clothing. What was the underlying vision behind this purple flannel three-piece suit featuring a custom silk artwork lining?

Purple Three-Piece Suit

Let us start with the fabric, which is the most eye-catching element. Regardless of the cut, it is impossible to ignore a suit made from purple Donegal-style fabric. The character of this material is best appreciated up close, where its visual complexity becomes fully apparent. Flecked flannel fabrics with a dense structure are often referred to as Donegal tweed. In this case, we are not dealing with a true Irish Donegal—since the manufacturer, Ariston, is Italian—but rather its refined Italian counterpart.

Flecked fabrics are an excellent choice for individuals who want to avoid traditional patterns like stripes or checks but have grown tired of plain materials and subtle weaves. Due to the variety of colored flecks embedded in the fabric, matching other wardrobe items is straightforward. It is best to treat this micro-pattern as a neutral base and focus on pairing accessories with the primary color of the material.

Purple is undeniably an uncommon choice for tailoring. In our guide section, we have previously featured a purple linen suit, though its shade was much lighter—closer to lilac than true purple. There is no mistaking this flannel for lilac, as the tone is saturated, deep, and distinct in its visual impact.

Wide Peak Lapels and Wide-Leg Trousers

The suit stands out for more than just its fabric choice. The exceptionally wide peak lapels, combined with the relaxed cut of the jacket and trousers, create a cohesive and deliberate silhouette. In this specific configuration, the garment evokes a cinematic look that balances classic tailoring proportions with bold styling. Whether this balance succeeds depends entirely on the confidence of the wearer.

You will not find a suit like this in standard retail stores because it is designed for a specific type of client. The wide lapels, patch pockets, hand-sewn Milanese buttonhole, short double-breasted waistcoat, side adjusters with rings, and 6 cm trouser cuffs all point to a precise design vision. For some, these details might feel overwhelming alongside a purple Donegal fabric, but Kacper achieved exactly the look he intended.

We often emphasize that personal confidence heavily influences how a garment is perceived by others. If a suit with this specific cut were worn by someone who does not wear tailored clothing on a regular basis, there is a strong chance they would feel uncomfortable in it.

Double-Breasted Waistcoat with a Lining Back

This project is a traditional three-piece suit, meaning the ensemble consists of a jacket, a waistcoat, and trousers. Unusually, the back of this waistcoat is not made from the main suit fabric, but from the lining material. We typically introduce this modification only at the explicit request of the client, but in this case, there was an excellent reason for the change: we wanted to showcase the custom silk artwork.

Silk Lining Featuring Custom Artwork

When time allows during the tailoring process, we can order a custom print of a client’s favorite artwork on pure silk. The image is properly scaled and mapped to the lining pattern before being meticulously sewn into the interior of the jacket and waistcoat. This represents the highest tier of suit personalization we offer, transforming the interior of the garment into a personal design statement.

Accessories for a Purple Suit

While one approach to styling such a bold suit involves choosing quiet accessories, we decided to complement the look with distinct colors and patterns. We paired the suit with a white shirt featuring light blue stripes and an orange patterned tie from the new collection. This tie serves as a contrasting focal point while remaining within a complementary color harmony. Suede is an ideal pairing for winter flannel fabrics, which is why the brown penny loafers chosen for this look are crafted from high-quality suede leather.
