Everything You Need To Know If You Choose a Linen Wedding Suit

This time, we went all in—an orange linen suit is certainly not a garment chosen frequently, but when we saw this fabric, we knew we had to show it to a wider audience. We are also using this opportunity to discuss linen itself.

With the growing popularity of Italian tailoring, traditional heavy wool suits have slightly lost their dominance. Of course, wool remains the primary raw material, and if we decide on highly elegant attire, there is practically no better fabric. However, when we combine Italian inspiration with the trend for less formal, rustic weddings, we quickly understand why more diverse materials have begun to dominate fabric collections. In today’s article, we will look at the advantages and disadvantages of a linen suit, as well as present an orange linen suit, which is probably the most extravagant garment tailored in our workshop.

WHAT MAKES A LINEN SUIT STAND OUT?

A linen suit is very easy to recognize at first glance because even after a few minutes of wear, it becomes slightly wrinkled. This is a characteristic feature of linen, which makes garments tailored from this material belong to the informal, everyday category. Unstructured linen jackets or linen trousers are excellent clothes to wear in spring and summer, not because of their wrinkling, but due to their hygroscopic properties.

Linen is capable of absorbing moisture and water up to 25% of its weight while still remaining dry to the touch, making this material one of the most comfortable choices for the hot months. If we combine this with other features of a summer jacket, namely an open-weave fabric and a looser cut, we achieve the perfect garment for high temperatures. Add to this its captivating appearance (which you either love or hate), and we get truly one-of-a-kind suits. Many Italians opt for a linen suit in navy blue or grey, which, in their opinion, works well even in formal situations. We might debate that point—but it doesn’t change the fact that linen enjoys immense popularity, and it is easy to see why!

WHY DOES LINEN WRINKLE, AND CAN IT BE CREASE-RESISTANT?

Linen fabric is made from the flax plant. The extracted fiber belongs to the category of bast fibers, which must be soaked in water for a long time to separate the individual fibers and then dried. After such a process, we obtain straw, from which fibers and fabrics are formed in further production. Since each of us probably has experience with breaking straw or even dried grass, it is easy to imagine that a fabric obtained from such a raw material will not be characterized by high elasticity. However, it repays us with many advantages, which we mentioned in the paragraph above.

Linen will wrinkle less if the fabric is thicker, but this does not guarantee total resistance to creasing. We can minimize this effect by choosing appropriate blends, meaning instead of opting for 100% linen, we can turn to blends of wool and linen, or wool, linen, and silk. The less linen, the more resistant the fabric will be to wrinkling, although its character will become more elegant. Many suits today are crafted from fabrics containing up to 70% wool, 15% linen, and 15% silk, which allows the garment to maintain its shape even after a full day of wearing, while still displaying the visible slubs and texture typical of linen.

Before we move on to this unprecedented linen suit, we must remind you that in our guide section, we do not only deal with such garments. If you are looking for a classic and timeless suit for your own wedding, we invite you to read our dedicated articles.

THE ORANGE LINEN SUIT

The orange linen suit visible in the photos has certainly already aroused interest. Among interesting colors in wedding styling, we have previously showcased a sage green wedding suit, and from linen fabrics—a purple linen suit—but those were still more subdued colors. This time, we went all in!

The choice of the orange fabric was dictated by the desire to show a suit that appears in our workshop only once or twice a season. Using a photo session as inspiration makes it much easier to showcase even the most rarely seen solutions, which helps clients visualize their dream suit. Despite the eye-catching fabric, we still wanted this suit to be highly wearable.

For this reason, the jacket features peak lapels and three patch pockets. This combines its sports character with a detail typical of made to measure tailoring, namely lapels not found in everyday casual jackets. The trousers themselves are unique and one of a kind because we replicated a waistband seen in many old drawings and engravings, with pleats smoothly transitioning into belt loops. You will not find such solutions in ready-to-wear clothing.

WHICH TIE AND SHOES TO CHOOSE FOR A LINEN SUIT?

With such a fabric, we could not opt for contrasting and flashy accessories. A white shirt with a linen blend serves as the background and simply had to harmonize with the weave of the outerwear material. The tie itself also matches in brightness—we didn’t want to add a dark focal point—and it is a complementary color to orange. The tie is made of silk, but its matte structure does not clash with the linen.

In contrast to the sessions with the light blue and beige suits, this time we opted for grain leather and a split-toe derby cut. Derbies are open-laced shoes that are suitable for gentlemen with a higher instep and a wider foot. We offer shoes in this cut through our made to measure service, where you can choose many solutions not available every day in our showrooms.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR THE DAY-TWO CELEBRATION? AN OLIVE LINEN JACKET

As in the case of the black suit and beige trousers, we wanted to show that a wedding suit can easily be utilized during the “poprawiny” (day-two celebration)—you just need to ensure the tailoring of a second pair of trousers or a second jacket. Then, one part of the set can also be used on the second day, completely changing the character of the styling. Apart from changing the jacket, we also played with the tie—we replaced the light blue with a navy blue, which perfectly complements the linen color. An olive linen jacket paired with a navy tie heavily tones down the bottom half of the outfit, making it significantly easier for everyday use.

The olive jacket, of course, differs from the orange one not only in color but also in cut. The difference may be subtle, but in the world of classic elegance, it is significant—we used notch lapels, which are typical for sports jackets, as well as jetted pockets, which are considered more formal. We thus reversed these details (in the orange jacket, the lapels were theoretically more formal, and the pockets were casual), although with olive linen fabric, one cannot really speak of raising the level of formality.

Kacper, the same model already known to readers for choosing eye-catching suits, appeared some time ago in a purple flannel suit. We did that photo session in Bergamo, and its main protagonist was a bigger sensation than many monuments located in this beautiful Italian town. In made to measure tailoring, with the right vision, you don’t have to limit yourself to cliché solutions!

WHICH SUIT TO CHOOSE FOR A BOHO OR RUSTIC STYLE WEDDING?

Pure linen is a material that makes a phenomenal impression in the right setting. Loosely cut, full of details, it will look stunning in the sun and a natural environment. On the other hand, after the ceremony itself, it will also work perfectly as a sports jacket or summer trousers—regardless of the chosen fabric color, because a linen suit will never be considered formal and will always be easy to break up into separates.

However, if the wrinkling is bothersome and the groom cannot accept it, blends of wool, linen, and silk should meet all expectations. Thanks to this, we preserve the visual aspect of the linen fabric while heavily limiting creases. This is definitely the most popular fabric choice for boho and rustic weddings.
